Question:

What temperature coffee should my Espressivo produce?

Answer:

The Espressivo coffee machine is designed to heat coffee to a temperature range of 66-77°.

The Espressivo coffee machine is designed to heat coffee to a temperature range of 66-77°. Any hotter than this could burn the coffee grounds and create a bitter taste. If your machine is not heating the coffee to this temperature, please ‘prime’ the machine first to allow it to reach the right temperature.

To prime the machine, turn it on and wait for the temperature light to go out. Without the filter holder in place, turn the control knob to the coffee cup symbol as usual until a full mug of water has passed through the machine directly into your serving cup. Throw this away, fill your filter holder with coffee grounds and proceed as normal.

If priming the machine makes no difference and your Espressivo is within the warranty period, please return it to your retailer in the first instance. Alternatively, you can return the machine to Dualit for inspection (UK customers only). Please see ‘Where can I get my Dualit appliance repaired or serviced? for more details.

Question:

Why is my coffee watery and cold?

Answer:

The ground coffee may be too coarse.

To create a stronger, hotter coffee, use a finer grind and a lighter tamp.

Question:

Why is coffee leaking from the rim of the filter?

Answer:

The brew head is not making a proper seal when the filter holder is locked in place.

This usually means that the brew head is not making a proper seal when the filter holder is locked in place. There are three main causes: too much coffee in the brew head, stray coffee grounds on the rim or, if you are using an ESE pod, the paper may not be tucked inside properly.

Question:

Why is the coffee flowing so slowly (or not at all)?

Answer:

The coffee is tamped too hard or the filter is blocked.

If the coffee grounds are tamped too hard, this may obstruct the flow of water through the filter. Also, check the filter containing the coffee grounds; if the perforations are obstructed, this can also restrict the flow of coffee. Clean with a brush.

If this fails to resolve the problem, try running the machine with the filter in place but empty of coffee grounds. You can also soak the filter in washing up solution for an hour and then scrub with a brush. Lastly, try running the machine without the filter holder in place.

Question:

Why isn't any water coming through?

Answer:

There is no water in the tank or the tank is not seated correctly. The showerhead needs cleaning.

Check that there is water in the tank and that the tank is seated correctly. When you place the tank in position, watch to see that the valve at the bottom rises and several air bubbles appear. If water still does not come through, the showerhead may be blocked and will need to be removed & cleaned (see removing the showerhead and gasket). If the filter is blocked, use a small pin to gently unblock the holes.

Question:

How do I remove the shower head and gasket from my Espressivo?

Answer:

It is easiest to do this procedure with the machine upside down.

Firstly, ensure that the screwdriver you are using is the correct size and fit; if not, you may damage the screw head. Before upturning the Espressivo, remove the water tank and drip tray (you may want to put down a towel or cloth as well). Then turn the machine upside down and use your screwdriver to remove the showerhead screw. If the screw will not turn, take a small hammer and give the screwdriver a short, sharp tap. This should 'break the lock' on the screw and allow the screw to turn.

Question:

How do I descale my Espressivo coffee machine?

Answer:

Pour a liquid descaler into the water tank and run it through the machine, as if making a coffee.

First pour a liquid descaler into the water tank and run it through the machine, as if making a coffee and steaming, until the tank is empty. You may need to put a large container on the drip tray.

Then rinse the water tank and refill with clean fresh water.

Run through with clean water three more times to clear the machine of any remaining descaler.
